Dear Friend,
Our quest for reform scored a major victory yesterday as the House joined
with the Senate in voting overwhelmingly for legislation to require
so-called "527" political organizations to disclose their donors to the
public. The Senate had already passed a similar amendment I had sponsored
a few weeks ago. This bill will go to the President for signing as the
first breakthrough on campaign reform. It just demonstrates the power of
the movement that we have created and the potential for change that exists.

having a burger and beer and a shoot out on the side at the piazza... some
gangsters unloaded about fourteen rounds into a mercedes and killed the
guy driving... right in front of the bank... everyone was running and diving
under tables it was right out of hollywood... after firing off about eight
or nine rounds I wasn't too concerned since none of them hit me but when the
guy started unloading again i was headed for the ground... great mercedes...
I am going to make an offer on it tomorrow... as is condition.. as long as
they get the body out before too long...what a town..the last time I was
this close was about two months ago when they killed two guys right across
the street in front of my other project.. I wonder where you know who was
having dinner tonight he would have loved this...

der von Dir in der FAZ-Diskussion genannte Titel: Warum uns die Zukunft
nicht mehr braucht? überrascht mich nicht... wollen wir doch nicht
untergehen, wie ein russisches U-Boot... da schwingt schon immer irgendwie
Mut und Angst mit... Eine amerikanische Antwort auf diese Frage gibt es z.B.
in dem Bericht von Andrian Kreye über 2-Stunden-Gespräche mit Jeremy Rifkin.
Der Vergleich Computerwelt und Feudalismus gefällt mir... Einerseits muß alles rasend schnell gehen, ist schon morgen völlig wertlos und wenn Du aus dem Fenster spuckst, wird das auf ewig in irgend einer Festplatte gespeichert... Bestimmt die Lebenszeit der Festplatte die Information über Dein Leben???
Andererseits sind die Besitzverhältnisse und das Verordnungswesen rammelfest.. außer durch Vererbung, Fusion, Kapitalbetrug oder Inflation ändert sich der Geld- und Grundbesitz unwesentlich... keine Chance also für großen Austausch über den Markt... Deine Leistung ist z.B. immer irgendwie abhängig von der Besitzgruppe...
Im Feudalismus gehörten die Menschen dem Land...
Wie vor der amerikanischen Revolution.
Interessant ist Tom's Computerspiel Civilisation: wenn die Staatsform Demokratie gewählt ist, kannst Du nicht mehr selber darüber entscheiden, einen Krieg anzufangen... Wenn ich aber jegliche Friedensangebote ablehne, brauche ich auch keinen neuen Krieg erklären... Hatte nicht Wesley Clark so ein Problem???
Ich stimme Rifkin jedoch in einem Punkt nicht zu, daß Eigentum nicht mehr wichtig wird. Ich denke, die Verteilungskämpfe im Osten sind nur ein Vorgeschmack auf das, was
kommen wird... Oder ist das nur falsch übersetzt???
ACCESS ist die Zugangsberechtigung, der Zugang... zwischen Computern.
Das Gegenteil ist DENIED, Zugang verwehrt...
Recently Mr. Rifkin, an American guru on the future shape of human
interrelationships, predicted that in the not too distant future we would
have the end of ownership of almost anything: from your personal transportation to the place where you live.
Reading about this I am reminded about the many times in the past that highly intelligent men have predicted, with great conviction, the end of things which were until then part of man's daily life. When airplanes became commercial transportation it would be the end of passenger ships or even the railroads. TV would be the end of the radio. E-mail would definitely be the end of the mailed letter.
So far they have always been wrong. Fortunately for the future of mankind, changes will continue to occur. Some routinely, some in form of a revolution. The industrial revolution; the IT revolution and others. Hopefully they will continue to improve our lives, as the pastone have surely done!

ich stimme Dir voll zu und ich fühle mich in alte Zeiten zurück versetzt:
wir haben gleiche oder ähnliche Gedanken - das macht auch eine
unverbrüchliche Freundschaft aus. Ich bin richtig froh, mich in Deinen
Gedankengängen wiederzufinden...
Übrigens:im Feuilleton der FAZ findet z.Z. eine hochinteressante Debatte
über das Thema statt: Warum uns die Zukunft nicht mehr braucht - sehr
nachdenklich. Es geht um die Frage, wohin die Wissenschaft treibt -werden
wird später von intelligenten Maschinen ausgerottet?. Die Beiträge leisten
nicht etwa grüne Lherer, sondern Computerexperten. Es geht um die Ethik in
der Wissenschaft - Ja, alter Haudegen, die Gegner wechseln schneller, als
man denkt- halte Dich fitt, treibe, wie ich, Sport und gib den Kampf und die
Freiheit und Würde des Individiums niemals verloren.

U.S. TROOPS IN KOSOVA: IN FOR THE LONG HAUL?

The amber waves of grain that once covered the rolling hills two miles east of Urosevac, in south-central Kosova,
are no more. They have been replaced with sprawling Camp Bondsteel. The heavily fortified, 755-acre military base is the largest the U.S. has built from the ground up since the Vietnam War. As U.S. President Clinton visited on 23 November to spend an early Thanksgiving with the troops, some observers here were wondering: Why is Bondsteel so big? Soldiers at this $36.6 million U.S. base say it's strictly about safety and comfort. If nothing else, it sends a direct message to Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, who already has provoked four wars this decade and may be capable of more mayhem. "The base is a response to the perceived need for a presence in the Balkans for years to come," says Bryan Hopkinson, Kosova director of the International Crisis Group, a Brussels-based think-tank. "It shows the U.S. means business." One day it could mean even more. Some say Camp Bondsteel will smooth the logistics of a future U.S. military intervention. Others see it yielding benefits in terms of Balkan geopolitics and trade. Perhaps with this in mind, says Hopkinson, U.S. planners are shrewdly "taking advantage of favorable circumstances" to build a base spacious enough to accommodate any future needs. Those "favorable circumstances" are the key. Three months of NATO air strikes this spring ended a Serbian campaign of "ethnic cleansing" that unleashed a wave of some 1 million refugees in the Yugoslav province. So ethnic Albanians here are thrilled to have 47,000 international troops--6,300 of them from the U.S.--protecting them, even if assistance has so far fallen short of their goal of independence. This contrasts starkly with Macedonia and Hungary, Yugoslavia's neighbors to the south and north. During the air strikes, both countries were uneasy about being drawn into NATO operations. Hungary, unlike Macedonia, is a NATO member. But the country only rid itself of Soviet troops nine years ago. "Albanians are the only people who embrace NATO with all their heart," says Sevdije Ahmeti, a human-rights activist in Kosova. "America will find no better allies in the Balkans, or in Europe, than the U.S." Allies may be needed with Milosevic still holding the reins in Belgrade. A slew of destabilizing scenarios are possible: secession by tiny Montenegro, leaving landlocked Serbia the lone Yugoslav republic; conflict with ethnic Hungarians in northern Serbia; civil war between pro- and anti-Milosevic factions; or upheaval in Macedonia, which has its own restive Albanian minority. With soldier-safety high on the Clinton administration's agenda, nothing is left to chance at Camp Bondsteel. The troops are ensconced behind miles of barbed wire and countless earthen and concrete barriers. Eleven guard towers keep watch. The base has a large helipad for nearly 55 transport, reconnaissance, and attack helicopters, including a dozen of the vaunted Apaches. There is no runway for fixed-wing fighter aircraft, although Hopkinson and other analysts speculate that the base may be big enough to accommodate a runway in the future. U.S. officials reject this possibility, pointing to the area's undulating terrain. They also have tried to quash rumors that Camp Bondsteel eventually may replace Aviano, Italy, as one of the prime European airfields of the U.S. Air Force.
Still, observers suggest Camp Bondsteel would serve several geostrategic functions. Though Kosova is a diamond-shaped province smaller than New Jersey, it has proximity to the Black Sea to the east, the Mediterranean to the south, and the Adriatic to the west. As NATO expands eastward, perhaps even into the Balkans, some say Bondsteel could underpin security for the alliance's southeastern flank. It's not only Russia that considers the Balkans within its sphere of influence. The Arab world is also looking to make inroads between the Bosnian Muslims and the predominantly Muslim but highly secular populations of Albania and Kosova, "Kosova can be treated as a small spot in the ocean, or a very important spot in Europe," says Ahmeti. "The Near East also tries to put U.S. [in] their sphere, so we're sandwiched." But some Western diplomatic sources scoff at the idea of Kosova having any real strategic value. "The notion that the U.S. is interested in forward bases and extending its international presence is fundamentally paranoiac and fundamentally wrong," says one diplomat, who asked not to be identified. "On the contrary, the U.S. would prefer to let countries conduct their own defense and not have to intervene around the world." And while President Clinton and others talk of a Marshall Plan-style reconstruction of the Balkans, ethnic Albanians hope that the mere sight of Camp Bondsteel may soothe jittery foreign investors. Ardian Arifaj, news editor of Kosova's leading daily paper, "Koha Ditore," says, "There's a perception here that there are American bases all over the world, and all those countries have prospered with them."

As an engineer, I'm not very good at stringing words together on philosophical subjects. I can't do much better than to quote W. Somerset Maugham (an American author) who said:

Heavens Grocery Store
As I was walking down life's
highway many years ago
I came upon a sign that read
Heavens Grocery Store.
When I got a little closer the
doors swung open wide
And when I came to myself I was
standing inside.
I saw a host of angels. They were
standing everywhere
One handed me a basket and said
Everything a human needed was
in that grocery store
And what you could not carry

First I got some Patience.

near so I just helped myself.
Then I said to the angel "Now

I have followed the development of Uli Schaarschmidt as an artist for the most part of the last decade
and I agree that as an artist he has finally come into his own. The paintings are brilliant, full of life,
and do something to a person (at least for me) on the most profound level.
I think we have a privilege of observing a great artist in the making!!!

Freedom has many definitions.
Spiritual freedom, the freedom of the mind, of our thoughts,
is the one freedom which cannot be taken from us.
Not in jail or by torture; our thoughts are untouchable.
Complete physical freedom, in it«s purest form, is
extremly rare. A mother«s freedom is limited by her
children. Her husband«s physical freedom is limited
by his job, among many other limitations.
Flying gives us the illusion of being physically free,
whether we are passengers or the pilot.
But what a wonderfull illusion!!

Liebe Familie, liebe Freunde, liebe Gäste,
Alle, die uns hier in Yeh Ganga besucht haben,
Mit vielen von Euch haben wir ja über die Probleme Indonesiens gesprochen,
nun ist der große Wechsel gekommen, doch leider nicht das Ende und viele,
besonders die ärmeren Indonesier, leiden große Not. Der Rupiah ist nichts
mehr wert, alles ist viel teurer geworden und Millionen haben keine Arbeit,
doch für die Touristen ist alles nun sehr billig, heute ist ein US-Dollar
16.000 Rupiah. Uns, unseren Kinder und Angestellten geht es allen gut, wir
haben die Revolution an CNN, BBC und der Jakarta Post erlebt. Doch Bali ist
leer, viele Gäste sind nicht gekommen, da die Regierungen gewarnt haben. Die
Balinesen sind ein friedliches Völkchen, sie haben das Parlament aufgelöst
und den Gouverneur nach Hause geschickt, noch mehr Zeremonien kommen nun
nach Yeh Gangga. Auch wir haben nur einige Gäste, empfehlt bitte Euren
Freunden, falls sie nach Bali reisen möchten, uns zu besuchen, oder kommt am
besten selbst.
